| Description of duties |
Role Purpose -
The purpose of the Tropical Research Technician role is to support the Corn and Soybean nursery projects and to ensure they are sprayed safely, accurately, timely and in the most cost effective manner. This is measured by nurseries accomplishing their timelines, reliability of seed multiplication, precision of sampling, planting/harvesting accuracy, nursery maintenance and budget efficiency.
Accountabilities -
- Work with an assistant to mix, load and apply pesticide products as specified by standard operating procedures (SOPs) using high-clearance or tractor-mounted/towed sprayer equipment
- Work with an assistant to follow all WPS requirements including notification and posting for pesticide applications, following all SOP specifications
- Maintain accurate and complete records of all pesticide applications using formats specified by SOP’s
- Entry of pesticide application data in to spreadsheets and/or databases using formats/forms specified by SOP’s
- Accurately and regularly organize and inventory pesticide products as specified by SOP’s
- Meticulously observe all Syngenta and pesticide label-specific safety regulations for pesticide storage, handling and application
- In cooperation with Maintenance Coordinator perform routine daily maintenance, light repair and upkeep of sprayers, trucks and other equipment on a daily basis; maintain work areas and equipment such that they are always clean and organized; organize and inventory sprayer parts and supplies
- Assist IPM manager with field scouting, notify IPM manager and agronomist of any irrigation, fertility or pest-control issues that may be observed in Syngenta fields

| Qualifications sought |
Critical knowledge:
- Minimum education requirements: High school diploma o Two-year diploma/certificate in agriculture related field preferred
Critical experience:
- Able to demonstrate:
- Basic knowledge of field crops production.
- Three to five years of pesticide application experience
- Three to five years of equipment operation experience; high-clearance sprayer experience preferred, but also other agricultural, construction equipment experience valuable
- Skill in daily preventive maintenance and light machine repair
- Excellent attention to detail, record keeping, documentation skills, and ability to follow specific written directions (e.g., Standard Operating Procedures)
- In possession of or able to obtain a Certified Pesticide Applicator’s License, Hawaii
- Able to communicate and work well with others, supervise an assistant and, be able to work independently
- May require working weekends and evenings on a regular basis during the winter months
- The ideal candidate will also be flexible, adaptable and safety-oriented.

Physical demands of the essential functions:
- Periods of intense work at critical times of the year (eg., planting, sampling, crossing, harvesting)
- Able to lift 50 lbs
- May be required to occasionally travel to the mainland and Oahu.
Working conditions while performing essential functions:
- Indoor - extensive work at a computer for long periods of time
- Outdoor - extensive work under various weather conditions for long periods of time
