Description of Location North Central Kansas Experiment Field. Headquarters near Scandia, KS on 160 acres with furrow irrigation. One satellite unit nearby on 32 acres has lateral sprinkler irrigation. Both units are part of the Bostwick Irrigation District. A second satellite unit with 160 non-irrigated acres is located approximately 10 miles east near Belleville, KS. The units are part of the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station of Kansas State University and will be staffed by one faculty member and two support personnel.
Salary Commensurate with experience.

Description of duties
  • Provide leadership in agronomic research designed to develop the agriculture in the region to its full economic potential consistent with sound ecological and environmental principles.
  • Research topics and extension programming should include irrigated and rainfed resource-efficient cropping systems including corn, soybeans, sorghum, alfalfa, small grains, and new or alternative crops.
  • Soil and crop management including soil fertility, variety evaluation, tillage, and weed control will be important parts of the research and extension programs.
  • Research will be conducted independently and in cooperation with faculty in multiple on-campus departments.
  • Expectations also include publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals, contributions to extension publications, and success in securing extramural funds.
  • Responsible for budget and daily activities of the fields.
  • Reports to the head of the Department of Agronomy.
Qualifications sought Required:
  • Ph.D. degree in Agronomy (crop, soil, and weed sciences) or closely related areas with emphasis in soil management/crop production.
  • Ability to independently conceive, plan, and implement field plot research.
  • Ability to interpret and report results to the scientific community and clientele of extension programs.
  • Excellent communication skills in written and oral English.
  • Interpersonal skills that promote interaction in a multidisciplinary context.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural setting and create an environment that fosters diversity, collegiality, and teamwork.
  • Familiarity with production agricultural practices.
Preferred:
  • Experience with agricultural practices common in the Great Plains.
  • Demonstrated record of scientific publication, extension programming, and competitive grant writing commensurate with current career development.
