Description of duties Role Purpose -
Performs research and/or development in collaboration and support of plant breeding strategies to create profitable products.

Accountabilities -

Agricultural research, population management and technical procedures leading to the development of improved commercial varieties of cereals, including technical discretion in the design, execution, analysis and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies.
  • Assist in the creation of novel populations.
  • Assist in field, laboratory and greenhouse evaluation of novel populations.
  • Assist in the selection of homogeneous lines from segregating populations.
  • Assist in the design, execution and statistical evaluation of lines in replicated field trials.
  • Assist in evaluation of disease resistance, adaptation and end use quality of lines.
Growing, maintaining and harvesting plants (field and greenhouse)
  • Design, map and manage field trials.
  • Manage all facets of growing and maintaining nurseries in the field and plants in the greenhouse.
  • Manage the harvest of greenhouse plants and field plots.
  • Manage daily operations of greenhouses, fields and growth rooms.
  • Responsible for maintenance and safe operation of research equipment.
  • Manage seed inventories and track seed movement, both incoming and outgoing.
Manage and Maintain Data
  • Manage all trial data and seed inventory.
  • Prepare technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses.
  • Ensure data integrity in the SPIRIT system.
Develop and Maintain Excellent Customer and Employee Relationships.
  • Assist in management of temporary personnel.
  • Assist in supervision of Assistant Plant Scientist.
  • Participate in field days and customer meetings.
Qualifications sought Critical knowledge
  • BA required
  • MS preferred
  • Knowledge of plant breeding, plant biology, statistics and agriculture.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the whole plant.
  • Knowledge of plant pathology.
Critical experience
  • With BA - 8+ years related experience.
  • With MS - 2 + years related experience - Direct management experience.
