Description of duties Role Purpose -

The purpose of the Associate Scientist is to assist the scientists in their roles to create superior products and help support the targeted goals for precision, accuracy, purity and efficiency.

Accountabilities -
  • Plan and design experiments, collect data, develop data summaries, interpret results, and make appropriate conclusions and recommendations
  • Prepare technical reports or data summaries and communicate reports to peers via oral presentations or written reports.
  • Provide weekly updates, written progress and status reports, timelines and data as requested by project leads.
  • Communicate and solve staffing needs, including hiring and assembling proper crew for necessary activities.
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with all Hawaii staff.
  • Understand, communicate, oversee, and execute complex work instructions,
  • Function as a productive member of a project team and the station.
  • Work with other station stakeholders in a positive manner to ensure project success.
  • Read and understand scientific literature, participate in meetings and share relevant information with others.
  • Manage Research Associates, Research Technicians, Field Technicians and seasonal staff.
  • Manager on or off station nurseries as well as off-station testing.
Qualifications sought Critical knowledge:
  • BS required / MS preferred in a scientific discipline
  • Demonstrated knowledge of breeding principles.
Critical experience:
  • Three to five years plant breeding support experience.
Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities:
  • Understanding of breeding methodology and how it relates to the development of superior products.
  • Understanding of the use of genetic markers and their application to a breeding program.
  • Ability to supervise and work with Research Associates, Field Technicians and other seasonal staff (may vary by location or specific job).
  • Ability to work with other staff members in a team environment.
  • Needs excellent organizations skills.
  • Ability to use MS Office, especially Word and Excel, and other standard software.
  • Ability to use and support proprietary database.
  • Ability and motivation to learn new technologies.
  • Ability to obtain a Passport for international travel.
Additional Information -
  • A minimum of two years in current position is required (requirement for internal applicants only)
  • All applicants must be eligible to work in the US.
Physical Demands of the Essential Functions:
  • Capable of working in high or low temperature conditions in field or greenhouse.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Capable of working long hours during time-critical periods of the growing season.
Working Conditions While Performing Essential Functions:
  • Field, greenhouse, laboratory, office.
  • Occasional travel to continental U.S.A. required for training and conference purposes. .
  • Travel outside continental U.S. may be required.
  • Work may be performed under environmental conditions of extreme high temperatures and moisture.
  • Potential pollen, fungal spores, agricultural dust, chemical pesticides in the allergens field or greenhouse
