Description of duties Would you relish the opportunity to lead the burgeoning public affairs program of one of the country's more influential basic science organizations? Do you have flairs for engaging Congress and the Executive Branch and for organizing effective online and in-person advocacy campaigns? Are you a team player with at least four years experience working, with increasing responsibility, with a wide variety of stakeholder groups? Have you directed an association public affairs program? Are you passionate about public outreach and education? And do you have superior written and verbal communications skills? If so, the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) would like to hear from you!

With the nations renewed commitment to science and a strong realization of the vital role that plants will play in solving many of the problems facing this country and the world, ASPB has markedly increased its support for its public affairs unit and is looking for just the right person to lead its public affairs programs. Working with ASPBs leadership, key governance committees, our external legislative affairs consultants, and your staff, as the Societys next Public Affairs Director you will have the opportunity to help establish and then lead the execution of a strategic agenda for ASPBs public affairs unit over the coming years.
Qualifications sought You will have attained at least an undergraduate degree in communications, political science or a related area that includes some study in the sciences, although a graduate degree in a pertinent area (e.g., law, science, or public policy) is preferred. You will have worked in or with the news media and have familiarity with writing and editing press releases and comparable statements. Legislative experience working for or with Congress is preferred; as are management experience; familiarity working with coalitions; and experience developing, executing, or overseeing education outreach programs.
