| Description of duties |
Nursery Manager - Waimea (Kekaha), HI - 1322
Role Purpose -
The purpose of the Winter Nursery Manager is to lead the nursery group activities associated with projects developed internally and externally to the site. This position coordinates planting, pollinating, harvest, and shipping of all conventional and non-regulated seed generated by the site, NAFTA, or internationally. The Kauai Nursery Manager is also responsible for managing five to six full time employees and their respective projects.
Accountabilities -
- Primary contact for the Breeders (MGD) and Product Evaluation and Advancement (PEA) Scientists with regards to nursery and testcross projects.
- Represents the Nursery Group in Kauai within the management team at the Site.
- Coordinates all non-trait nursery and testcross operations at the Kauai Site.
- Supplies updates and timely information to the breeding and PEA groups.
- Works closely with Parent Seed, Cultural Operations, and Traits at the Site.
- Responsible for employee development and safety within the Nursery Group.

| Qualifications sought |
Critical knowledge:
- MS degree in a scientific discipline preferred, typically plant breeding or agronomy.
- Strong understanding of nursery and parent seed operations.
- Knowledge of Hawaii growing environments is not essential, but is desirable.
Critical experience:
- A good working knowledge of plant breeding (genetics, field plot and nursery techniques) and breeding programs in corn and soybean. Experience with nursery, trait, and/or parent seed operations.
Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities:
- Ability to supervise, work with, mentor, and develop Research Associates, Field Technicians as well as seasonal staff - Ability to work with other staff members in a team environment.
- Excellent organizations skills.
- Ability to use MS Office, especially Word and Excel, and other standard software.
- Ability to use and support the SPIRIT system.
- Ability and motivation to learn new technologies.
- Thorough knowledge breeding techniques.
- Ability to efficiently resolve conflicts in a timely manner.
