Description of duties Role Purpose

The purpose of the Soybean Testing Specialist role is to manage soybean performance trials on behalf of multiple scientists and programs, for the purpose of supporting product advancement, product placement, or evaluating emerging technology; ensuring trials are completed safely, timely, accurately, within a pre-determined annual budget, and according to Syngenta policies and applicable laws.

Accountabilities

1) Perform soybean yield testing activities including Planting, agronomic management and harvesting between 35,000 to 40,000 plots (expected capacity) of US summer yield trials. Managing local related activities including: location selection, cooperator relationships, field layout, trial mapping, packaging and sorting. Acquire and maintain soybean field, road and lab equipment including: laptop computer, hand held computer, seed counter, tractor, planter, sprayer, cultivator, combine, truck, & trailer. Coordinating through a third-party labor provider for seasonal support as determined by resources.

2) Perform data collection, data transfer, and data management Insuring quality, accuracy, precision, completeness, timeliness. Data collection and management includes mapping trials, making field books, recording field notes electronically, notes download to PC, notes upload to SPIRIT, and preliminary data analysis (including trouble-shooting problems, outlier detection, etc.). Gather regular feedback regarding the plot quality and efficiency of the testing program from Soybean Breeders and PDA scientists to maintain an environment of continuous improvement.

3) Support yield testing and purity activity in Tropical and Contra nurseries Training and supporting local personnel on sorting, planting, data collection and mechanical harvest. Provide hands on supporting for purity & maturity notes, rouging, bundle & bulk harvest, threshing, cleaning, packaging, shipping back to the US.

4) Plan, coordinate, and perform cross function activities in the winter time including Equipment maintenance. November and March soybean tissue sampling at winter nurseries. Seed sorting, conditioning and cleaning, or packaging off and on-site. Safety, site management, and administration

5) Manage a budget within the agreed to parameters. Align resource and work plans in cooperation with Soybean Breeders, Soybean PDA, the on-site Station Manager (Corn or Soybean) Regional coordinator.

6) Coordinate work at home site with on-site Station Manager (Corn or Soybeans) Coordinate work / office space and office protocols Participate in site safety meetings and follow agreed procedures
Qualifications sought Critical Knowledge:
  • A thorough knowledge of soybean agronomy & production, cultural practices, fertility, and pest management.
  • Understanding of testing environments and impact on product evaluation and line selection.
  • General understanding of field, road and lab equipment.
  • Ability to obtain a Class A CDL and a Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License.

Critical Experience:
  • MS or Bachelor's degree with minimum three years experience in field research preferred
  • Demonstrated ability in field research process management
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and motivate staff and teams
