Date position available Fall 2008 Description of duties The Director of the University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program (UC IPM) reports to the Office of the Associate Vice President of the Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and has responsibility for increasing utilization of ecologically based integrated pest management programs. The Director will provide leadership in IPM and will build coalitions and partnerships that link with communities and public agencies, increase the predictability and effectiveness of pest management techniques, develop science-based pest management programs that are economically and environmentally sustainable, and socially appropriate, and protect human health and the environment by reducing risks caused by pests or management practices. The major responsibilities of the Director are: Provide leadership and direction for development of UC IPM Program policies and procedures. Oversee the organizational units that comprise the program. These units include the competitive grants program, communication systems, and IPM advisors. The director will keep abreast of progress and issues, see that priority goals are met, and ensure adequate coordination across units. Under the Director's direct supervision are associate directors for agriculture IPM, urban and community IPM, communications, and an administrative manager, who manages organizational aspects of UC IPM. Appropriate coordination of UC IPM activities with those of other ANR special programs, the Agricultural Experiment Station, and cooperative extension programs is expected. Identify and advocate for appropriate sources of funding for UC IPM priority programs. Develop annual ANR budget for UC IPM, including both internal and external funds. Serve as administrative contact for USDA CSREES Smith-Lever 3(d) IPM Extension funds and USEPA Pesticide Safety Education Program funds and comply with budgetary and reporting requirements. Lead competitive grants programs to establish program goals and means of achieving them. Conduct solicitation, review, and award of grants in a fair, transparent manner. Coordinate reporting to ANR and funding agencies and promote the results of the programs. Provide programmatic direction for IPM advisors and IPM extension specialists. Maintain memoranda of understanding with ANR regional CE directors and deans to formalize responsibilities for administrative and programmatic management for IPM Advisors and IPM extension specialists. Communicate UC IPM activities and accomplishments within ANR. Communicate UC IPM activities to external constituencies, including licensed pest managers, growers, representatives of local, state, and federal agencies, and the public. Develop a teaching, research, and extension program consistent with a 25% I&R (Instruction and Research) and 75% CE appointment in a discipline-based home department. Qualifications sought Candidates must have: a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline; a strong record of leading and managing staff and resources for a complex organization; a broad knowledge of crop and pest management principles, and an outstanding record of achievement and leadership in IPM research; excellent communication skills (oral and written) and demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively, and the ability to facilitate multidisciplinary research among these faculty, local, state and federal agencies and public groups; demonstrated ability to develop an innovative teaching and research program consistent with a 25% Instruction and Research and 75% Cooperative Extension appointment. Demonstrated skill in obtaining extramural funding to support research is expected.
