Description of duties Role Purpose

The purpose of the Associate Breeder Scientist role is, under the mentorship of a Soybean Breeder and with other Scientists, to develop improved soybean germplasm and varieties for commercialization.

Accountabilities:
  • Responsible for a portion of a soybean breeding program and assigned research projects, for commercial product development to a defined target market.
  • Manage a portion of the soybean breeding pipeline by leading following activities:
  • Plan breeding crosses for populations.
  • Plan utilization of allotted nursery and field trial resources on mainland and contra season location(s)
  • Determine number of breeding starts, extensiveness of sampling and number of reps and environments of testing.
  • Participate in product advancement decisions
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of available germplasm, performance and product needs.
  • Participate in all plot tours and advancement meetings
  • Make selections and advancement decisions through Stage 3
  • Participate in selection and advancement decisions from Stages 4 through 6.
  • Assist with decisions on trait conversion decisions
  • Breeding Process Improvement
  • Work towards maximum efficiency of germplasm improvement (genetic gain and cost)
  • Ensure appropriate technology integration in germplasm improvement projects and product development processes
  • Plan, evaluate and implement where appropriate marker-assisted breeding (MAB), and other breeding tools.
  • Participate in global sharing of information on breeding protocol improvement
  • Work with local staff and lead breeder to provide feedback that allows continuous improvement in plot quality and testing efficiency
Qualifications sought Critical Knowledge:
  • A thorough knowledge of breeding theory (genetics, statistics, genetic gain theory, and field plot technique). Good knowledge of marker applications to breeding.
  • Ph.D. or Masters with equivalent experience
Critical Skills:
  • Excellent organization, communication and computer skills.
  • Interpersonal skills required to successfully function as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to understand and communicate complex instructions.
Critical Experience:
  • Participation in a plant breeding program.
