Description of duties CANDIDATES MUST BE WILLING TO LIVE/WORK ON CATALINA ISLAND!

SUPERVISOR: Oversees the operation & maintenance of the James H. Ackerman Native Plant Nursery. This facility is responsible for producing all plant & seed material used in the Conservancy's restoration projects. Currently, the nursery has a container capacity of about 22,000 plants. Over 145 native species are represented in the seed collections. Projects involve collection of appropriate seed or cuttings, processing and storage of collected material, production & maintenance of container stock, planting seedlings and seeds at restoration sites and providing long term on-site support as necessary. Site locations occur throught the island and are based on Conservation Department priorities.

TECHNICIAN: Assists in the maintenance & operation of the Conservancy's James H. Ackerman Native Plant Nursery. This position requires a wide range of skills including horticultural abilities, technical documentation, fieldwork, equipment care and maintenance, and occasional educational outreach. Responsibilities include a combination of nursery, field and office work.

Qualifications sought SUPERVISOR: B.A. or B.S. in horticulture, botany, or equivalent from accredited institution. At least two to three years experience in supervising a small-scale nursery faciity or four to five years working in such a facility.

TECHNICIAN: Associates (2 year certification) in horticulture, botany, or the equivalnet from an accredited insitution. At least two years working at a nursery with a production of at least 15,000 container plants, including propagation, care, and pest control experience. Preference given to candidates experienced in working with California natives or plants requiring a Mediterranean climate. Experience working safely with hand and power tools including pruners, loppers, saws, chippers, chainsaws, shovels, and hoes.
