Type of position This is a 9-month tenured or tenure track position with opportunity for summer appointment. Responsibilities will be allocated as 75% research and 25% teaching in the Department of Crop Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Description of duties A faculty position in plant breeding and genetics with emphasis on perennial grasses as feedstocks for the emerging biofuels industry The successful applicant is expected to develop an internationally-recognized, externally-funded research program that enhances our biological understanding of temperate and/or tropical perennial grass crop species, establishes structured breeding and genetics systems, and applies this information to increase renewable fuels production in sustainable agricultural systems. Areas of interest include reproductive biology and fertility, biomass yield and quality, and improvement of resource use efficiency. It is expected that at least 50% of the candidate s research efforts will focus on EBI efforts to improve perennial feedstock crops (such as Miscanthus, switchgrass or sugarcane) for bioenergy production, funding for these projects will be provided by the EBI. The successful candidate will also help develop and offer courses in curricula for student education in bioenergy research.
Qualifications sought A Ph.D. is required and research experience beyond the Ph.D. is preferable. The candidate must have education in plant breeding and genetics, crop sciences, or related disciplines. Prior experience with the biology and genetics of perennial grasses is highly desirable. The candidate must demonstrate excellent potential to conduct and report independent and team-based research, attract extramural research funding, and develop an outstanding teaching program. For appointment at the Associate or Full Professor rank, the candidate must exhibit a very strong record of scholarship that includes credentials meeting the standards required to attain that level at the University of Illinois. Such credentials include national and/or international recognition and impact in research and teaching in a related area, with clear evidence of initiating, completing, and publishing the results of successful projects.
