A one day symposium and workshop on the use of molecular genomics in weed science will be held in conjunction with the 2008 annual meeting of the Weed Science Society of America, February 4-7, 2008 in Chicago.

The aim of this symposium/workshop is to address the current lack of funding for molecular biology/genomics approaches in weed science research. The symposium portion will summarize current efforts and opportunities with weed genomics. Speakers and topics are:
  • David Horvath – model weeds
  • Stephen Duke – genomics of plant-plant interactions
  • Neal Stewart – non-target herbicide resistance mechanisms
  • Erica Bakker – weed evolution
  • Loren Rieseberg – weedy and invasive traits within Asteraceae
  • Rod Wing – genomic resources for grass weeds
  • Jonathan Gressel – weed genomics opportunities
  • Carol Mallory-Smith – using genomics to advance weed management
  • Michael Bowers – a USDA insider’s perspective
During the workshop portion, breakout sessions will discuss and determine the path forward in applying tools from the genomics revolution to weed science. A complimentary lunch will be provided to encourage participation in the workshop.
